World records at Bloukrans Bungy Bridge

Six officially certified Guinness World Records titles have been set at Bloukrans Bridge. Some belong to the site itself. Most belong to people who decided that one jump off a 216 metre bridge was not quite enough.

Here they are, in the order they matter.

1. World’s highest commercial bungy jump from a bridge

The record the site was built on. Face Adrenalin has operated the 216 metre jump from the centre of the Bloukrans arch since December 1997, and it is the highest of its kind. It remains the highest bungy jump in Africa and the highest in the Southern Hemisphere.

2. Oldest person to bungy jump

Mohr Keet, South Africa, aged 96, in April 2010.

This is the one that stops people in their tracks, and it is worth sitting with for a second. A man born before the First World War stepped off a bridge into a gorge in his late nineties. It was not even his first jump at Bloukrans.

3. Most bungy jumps in one hour by a woman

Veronica Dean, South Africa, 19 jumps in a single hour.

Nineteen jumps in sixty minutes means roughly three minutes per cycle, including being retrieved from the middle of the gorge, walked back, re-rigged and checked. It is as much a record for the crew as for the jumper.

4. Most bungy jumps in 24 hours by a man

Bill Boshoff, South Africa, 101 jumps in 14 hours and 23 minutes, in May 2002.

He finished with nearly ten hours of the day left. The limiting factor at that point is not nerve, it is what repeated deceleration does to a body.

5. Most bungy jumps in 24 hours

Kevin Scott Huntly, 105 jumps, in May 2011, during an event at the bridge.

Huntly raised funds for local community projects in the process, which has been a recurring theme of record attempts here.

6. Most bungy jumps in one hour outdoors

Linda Macaskill Potgieter, South Africa, 23 jumps in one hour, on 15 August 2022.

The most recent of the six, and the fastest turnaround the bridge has ever run. Twenty three jumps in an hour is a jump roughly every two and a half minutes, sustained for the full sixty.

What six records actually tell you

Records like these are not really about the individuals, impressive as they are. They are a statement about the operation underneath them.

To run 105 jumps in a day, or 23 in an hour, the same procedure has to be executed correctly over and over with no drift and no shortcuts. The checks that happen on the thousandth jump have to be identical to the checks on the first. Record attempts are, in effect, a stress test of a safety system.

Bloukrans has passed that test repeatedly, and has done so while maintaining a 100% safety record since 1997.
