You have booked a slot on a bridge in a part of South Africa that gets rain in every month of the year. It is a reasonable thing to worry about.

The good news is that weather stops operations here far less often than people expect.

Rain is usually not the problem

Light rain and drizzle rarely affect anything. You get wet, the gorge fills with mist, and honestly it looks spectacular.

The Tsitsikamma is a high rainfall area and the operation is built around that reality rather than surprised by it. Turning up on a grey day does not mean a wasted trip, and some of the best photographs come from exactly those conditions.

Wind is the one that matters

Strong wind is the main reason operations pause.

The bridge is completely exposed and the gorge channels air along its length, which means gusts can be significantly stronger at the centre of the span than on the approach road. Above a certain threshold the crew will hold jumps until it settles.

These pauses are usually temporary. Conditions in a gorge change quickly and a hold often lasts a matter of minutes rather than the rest of the day.

Lightning stops everything

A large steel and concrete structure suspended over a gorge is not a place to be during an electrical storm. If there is lightning in the area, operations stop until it has passed. This is not negotiable and it is the right call.

Book the morning

This is the practical advice that comes out of all of the above.

Wind on this coast tends to build through the day, so mornings are generally the calmest window. An early slot also leaves you room to be flexible. If conditions pause your jump at 9am, there is a whole day left to work with. If it happens at 4pm, there is not.

The crew decide, and you should want it that way

The call to hold or resume is made by the team on site, based on what they are seeing rather than on a forecast or on how many people are waiting.

It is worth remembering that a crew willing to pause an operation and disappoint a queue is the same crew you want checking your attachment points. Nobody who takes weather seriously is cutting corners elsewhere.
