Visitor with arms outstretched on the SkyWalk beneath the Bloukrans Bridge deck

Nobody wants to think about clothing when they are working up to stepping off a bridge, which is exactly why it is worth sorting out before you arrive.

None of this is complicated. There are just a few things that make the day easier and one or two that can catch people out.

The short version

  • Closed shoes that stay on your feet
  • Comfortable clothes you can move and bend in
  • A layer, in every season
  • Empty pockets

Footwear

Closed shoes, laced or secured. Trainers are ideal.

You are walking a metal catwalk with an open gorge underneath, so anything that can slip off your foot is a problem, and not only for you. Flip flops, backless sandals and loose slides are the classic mistake. If that is all you have with you, the crew will usually ask you to take them off and secure them.

Heels are not workable. Neither are brand new shoes you care about, because the platform is concrete and steel.

Clothing

You will be fitted with a full body harness, which means straps around your thighs, waist and shoulders. Think about what sits comfortably under that.

  • Shorts or trousers work well. Anything you can sit, bend and step in.
  • Skirts and dresses are awkward. The harness goes around each leg, and you will be upside down at some point. Wear something else.
  • Avoid anything very loose or flapping. It gets caught in straps and it is unpleasant in the wind.
  • Nothing you would be upset to scuff. Harnesses are firm and the site is industrial.

Bring a layer, whatever the forecast says

This is the single most common thing people get wrong.

It is consistently cooler and windier out on the bridge than it is in the car park, because the gorge funnels air and the structure is completely exposed. People arrive on a warm Garden Route afternoon in a vest and regret it within five minutes of walking out.

A light jacket or hoodie is enough. In winter, bring more than you think.

Empty your pockets

Anything in a pocket at 216 metres is going into the gorge, and it is not coming back.

Phones, keys, wallets, loose change, vapes, sunglasses. Take all of it out and store it before you head to the platform. The same goes for anything that can come off in freefall or on the rebound, which includes hats, dangling earrings, necklaces and loose glasses.

If you wear prescription glasses, secure them with a strap or leave them behind and accept a slightly blurry gorge.

Do not try to film it yourself

Hand held phones and cameras are not going with you off the edge. Beyond the near certainty of losing it, a dropped object from that height is a genuine hazard.

The site handles photography and video, and it is worth taking. This is not a day you will want to have to describe from memory.

By season

  • Summer: shorts, t shirt, trainers, and a light layer for the bridge.
  • Autumn and spring: long trousers, a hoodie, and something windproof.
  • Winter: proper layers and a jacket. It is exposed up there and the wind does not care what month it is.

Anything else

Tie long hair back. Bring sunscreen in summer, because there is no shade on the bridge. That is genuinely it.
